AIGP certification preparation: courses, study options and a practical plan

Published 26 October 2026 · 4 min read

Start AIGP preparation with the current IAPP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint. Use it to identify what you need to learn before deciding whether to buy a course.

A structured programme can help organise your study. Its value depends on whether it addresses your gaps, uses current material and helps you apply the concepts.

What is AIGP?

AIGP stands for Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional. IAPP’s certification addresses responsible AI governance, including AI foundations, relevant laws and frameworks, and governance across the AI life cycle.

It is a different learning objective from developing AI software. You may need to understand technical concepts well enough to assess decisions without learning to implement every component yourself.

Start with the official resources

IAPP provides an exam blueprint, a study guide with sample questions and a certification candidate handbook. Use the current versions linked from its certification page.

Create a simple gap assessment. For each topic, record whether you can explain it, apply it to a scenario and identify a reliable reference.

Familiarity with a term is a weaker standard than being able to use it.

Someone with a privacy background may need more work on AI development concepts. Someone with a technical background may need more practice connecting governance responsibilities with organisational decisions.

Which study route fits you?

Route When to consider it What to check
Self-study using the official blueprint You can organise your learning and identify reliable materials Coverage of unfamiliar topics and access to explanations
IAPP self-paced training You want an organised course with flexible study times Access period, included resources and total cost
Live training You benefit from questions, discussion and scheduled sessions Timetable, instructor and opportunities to participate
Independent preparation course You want another teaching style or additional practice Currency, blueprint mapping and any claimed authorisation

IAPP offers online, live online, in-person and group training formats. Its curriculum includes AI foundations, impacts, risk management, laws and standards, and governance of development and deployment.

Our recommendation is to choose the format after completing your gap assessment.

How to evaluate a preparation course

Look for a clear explanation of how its content maps to the current blueprint. Check when the material was updated and whether practice answers explain the reasoning.

If a provider claims to be an official training partner, verify that claim through IAPP’s directory.

IAPP cautions that training does not guarantee a pass and that its training courses are not purely exam preparation.

A course title containing “AIGP” is therefore only a starting point for your assessment.

A six-week study plan

The schedule below is our suggested structure. Adjust it to your existing knowledge and available study time.

Week 1: map the gaps

Read the official materials and assess each topic. Choose your study resources and set realistic weekly study periods.

Week 2: strengthen technical understanding

Practise explaining core AI concepts in ordinary language. Draw the stages of a hypothetical system from initial proposal through development, use and review.

Week 3: organise laws, standards and frameworks

Build a comparison sheet recording each resource’s purpose and scope. Distinguish legal requirements from voluntary guidance, using current authoritative sources.

Week 4: apply governance concepts

Choose a fictional scenario, such as an organisation considering an AI customer service tool.

Identify the intended purpose, affected people, information involved, responsibilities, evidence needed and arrangements for reviewing performance.

Week 5: use legitimate practice questions

Review your reasoning for incorrect answers. Return to the relevant topic and explain why the alternative answers do not fit.

Week 6: consolidate and assess readiness

Revisit weak areas, practise under timed conditions and check the candidate handbook and booking requirements.

IAPP currently lists the AIGP exam as 100 questions with an allocation of 2.75 hours. Confirm the format before booking.

Budget for the whole process

Check the exam fee, optional training and materials, applicable taxes, and ongoing certification requirements. Compare what each purchase includes before assuming a training package also includes the exam.

Set your exam date according to your preparation and booking conditions.

Our recommendation: begin with the official blueprint, identify your gaps and pay for the support that addresses them. Aim to leave your preparation able to explain governance decisions as well as recognise exam answers.
