Google AI Essentials adds a hands-on capstone project

Google AI Essentials has been one of the most recommended starting points for non-technical professionals since it launched, under 10 hours, no coding, a real Google certificate at the end. It's still exactly that course, and it hasn't been changed.

What's new is a separate, more substantial program: the Google AI Professional Certificate. It's easy to confuse the two given the near-identical branding, so here's the actual difference.

What's different about the new certificate

In short, Essentials teaches you to use AI tools. The new Professional Certificate teaches you to build a portfolio of AI-assisted work you can point to in an interview.

Should you retake Essentials now that this exists

No. The original course hasn't been superseded or changed, and there's no capstone bolted onto it retroactively. If you finished Essentials and want more, the sensible move is to enrol in the new Professional Certificate directly rather than repeat a course you've already completed. Think of it as a genuinely separate, bigger step up, not an updated version of the same thing.

Who should skip straight to the new one

If you've never done any Google AI training, it's worth asking what you actually want out of it. If you just want fluency with prompting and responsible use in under half a day, Essentials still does that job well and remains the lighter, faster option. If you want something you can point to as evidence of real applied work, particularly useful if you're job hunting or angling for a promotion, the Professional Certificate with its capstone is the stronger credential, and Google is backing it with an unusually generous inclusion: free access to Google AI Pro for the duration.

Bottom line

This isn't Essentials getting an upgrade, it's Google adding a genuinely more substantial program next to it. Both remain useful, they just solve different problems: one is a fast primer, the other is a portfolio builder. Pick based on whether you want speed or something to actually show for it.
