DataCamp's Understanding Artificial Intelligence review: the two hour AI primer, assessed

★★★★☆ 4.2/5

Quick verdict

The best interactive option in the crowded two-hour AI primer category. The exercises make concepts stick better than pure video equivalents, and the first chapter is free, so trying it costs nothing. It's still a primer: nobody finishes it with a skill, they finish it with a vocabulary, and it's fair to want more.

Every platform now has a short no-code AI explainer. Most are video lectures with a quiz stapled on. DataCamp's Understanding Artificial Intelligence is the same length as the pack, about two hours, but swaps passive video for its interactive exercise format, and that single difference is most of what this review is about.

What it covers

The standard primer syllabus: what machine learning is and isn't, how models learn from data, where generative AI fits, what the technology does badly, and a light pass over ethics and limitations. No code, no maths. The first chapter is free without a card; the rest needs a DataCamp subscription.

The format difference

Instead of watching someone explain training data, you drag examples into labelled and unlabelled buckets and get corrected when you're wrong. It sounds trivial, and it is more effective than it sounds: being wrong and corrected mid-concept beats being told, for retention, and it keeps you honest about whether you actually followed. Against Andrew Ng's AI for Everyone, the reigning course in this category, the comparison splits cleanly: Ng gives better strategic framing for decision makers, DataCamp gives better concept retention for people who'll go on to touch data.

The honest limits

Two hours is two hours. You leave with a solid vocabulary, a correct mental model, and no ability to do anything yet, which is the deal with every course in this category and worth saying plainly since none of their landing pages will. The subscription question also lingers: paying monthly for one two-hour course makes no sense in isolation, so this really functions as an on-ramp to the rest of DataCamp's library, and it's fair to read it as marketing for the platform. Good marketing, but marketing.

Who it's for

Data-curious professionals who want their first structured pass at AI concepts and suspect they'll continue into hands-on material afterwards, and anyone who has tried video primers and retained nothing. If you want strategy framing for leadership decisions instead, AI for Everyone remains the better fit, and our business guide covers that side.
