Hugging Face courses review: the free NLP and agents courses, assessed

★★★★☆ 4.5/5

Quick verdict

The strongest free technical AI education available in 2026, covering transformer fundamentals through to current agent development. The fact that it is free is a strategy rather than a compromise: Hugging Face teaches you its ecosystem because developers who understand it build on it. The rough edges are real, including notebook rot, uneven depth between chapters and documentation-adjacent stretches, and none of them change the verdict at this price.

Hugging Face occupies a strange position in AI education: a commercial company whose free courses out-teach most paid competitors, for the transparent reason that its business depends on developers being fluent in its ecosystem. That incentive alignment is why the material is good, and it is also the lens to read it through. This review covers the two courses that matter, the NLP and Transformers course and the newer AI Agents course.

The NLP and Transformers course

The canonical free path into how modern language models actually work: tokenisation, the transformer architecture, fine-tuning, and the Hub ecosystem, taught through runnable notebooks. The architecture chapters are the standout, clearer than most paid equivalents and honest about the maths without drowning in it. This is the factual floor under everything else in modern AI, and it is the course our public sector guide points technically curious readers towards after CS50.

The AI Agents course

Newer, more current, and the top engine pick for our developer profile: agent architectures, tool use, orchestration patterns and evaluation, with framework material covering the current landscape rather than one vendor's slice. Where Eden Marco's paid LangChain course, reviewed on this site, goes deeper on one stack with maintained projects, this goes wider for free. The honest developer path is this one first and the paid one when it runs out of depth, which is the sequencing our developer guide recommends.

The rough edges

Community-built shows. Notebooks break as library versions move and fixes lag, some chapters go deep while their neighbours skim, and stretches of both courses read as annotated documentation, competent but not designed teaching. There is no certificate worth mentioning, no support beyond forums, and no hand-holding. Free means free.

The ecosystem question

You are being taught to prefer Hugging Face's tools, and the teaching is good enough that you probably will. That is a fair trade stated plainly, and it is the same trade every vendor course on this site involves. The difference is that this one costs nothing, and the underlying concepts transfer entirely.

Who they're for

Developers building on language models, analysts and researchers who want mechanistic understanding with their hands on real code, and anyone sequencing from CS50-grade foundations into the current era. Both courses assume comfortable Python, and neither is a first course.

Common questions

Which of the two courses should I take first?

NLP and Transformers for understanding, Agents for shipping. If you must pick one and you are employed as a developer in 2026, take Agents.

Are the broken notebooks a dealbreaker?

An irritation rather than a dealbreaker. Fixes usually exist in the forums, and debugging version drift is, honestly, part of the job being trained for.

Do these replace a paid course?

For most developers, the free pair plus project time beats one paid course. The paid tier earns its keep on maintained depth in a single stack, which is exactly how our LangChain review frames it.
